The Enhanced E-Passport: A Quick Guide.

As part of the country’s latest round of changes, the Enhanced E-Passport was approved by the federal government. An extensive assessment of the existing 10-year-old e-passport booklet, with just a 5-year validity period, led to the creation of the new one.

Enhancements to the E-Passport Reforms: Features and Benefits

The introduction of a new, more secure passport; the use of Polycarbonate technology to improve the passport’s quality;

Saves trips to the passport office with a booklet with a 10-year validity;

Automating the issuing procedure to increase transparency and reduce the need of touts and middlemen

Only accepts payments made through the internet;

Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) implementation to assure tracking of applications, communication with applicants on application progress, and data gathering.

Eliminate human interference, improve document storage, improve speed of decision-making,

Facilitate the flow of processes, provide applicants with a processing environment that is friendly, and provide an efficient and compliant address method

Types of Enhanced E-Passport

There are a variety of new Passport options available.

Validity period of five years, 32 pages (Adults and Minors)

Validity period of 5 years, 64 pages (Adults and Minors)

64-page booklet with a ten-year shelf life

Adults can select from any of the three options listed above. However, young children under the age of eighteen can only choose between categories I and ii. Passports with a 10-year validity period cannot be issued to anyone under the age of 18 because of ICAO regulations and the likelihood of their physical appearance changing during that time period.

Fees for the Enhanced E-Passport

32 Page 5-year Standard Passport       25,000.00    130.00

64 Page 5-year Standard Passport       35,000.00    150.00

64 Page 10-year Standard Passport for adults only (18 years and above)        70,000.00          230.00

32 Page 5-year Official Passport         15,000.00    N/A

Because the National Identity Number (NIN) was not yet fully integrated with the Enhanced E-Passport, the launch date was pushed back to April 29th, 2019.

Requirements.

Enhanced E-Passport requirements are the same as for old passports in terms of application types, and a National Identification Number (NIN) is also necessary and mandatory for the issuing of the New Passport.

The information on the old passport will transfer over to the Enhanced E-Passport without change.
